Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between handcrafted soaps and soaps sold in most retail stores?

Our handcrafted soaps are made traditionally, meaning we combine Lye and Oils to produce soap, without any harsh detergents that are commonly found within soaps sold in retail stores.

Do you use Lye?

Yes, in order to create any soap, sodium hydroxide also known as Lye, combines with oils or fats in a process called saponification to produce soap. The lye is all consumed in the reaction with the oil and is not present in the final product.

What is the white powder that is on top of some of the soaps?

A small film of powder may form on the top of some of our soaps. This powder is called Soda Ash and it can form on top of soaps when the lye in the soap batter comes into contact with the air. Soda ash is completely safe and does not impact the soap in any way. After using your soap the first time, most if not all of the Soda ash will wipe away.

What is the shelf life of these soaps?

The shelf life of our soaps will depend on the recipe used, however any soaps using our signature SAPUN recipe will have a shelf life of 1 year unused, but please make sure to remove the soap from its shrink wrap. These natural soaps need to breathe for the best shelf life. Actual use of the product can last for up to 4 weeks (on average) of daily use.

How can I extend the life of the soaps?

Since these handmade cold process soaps will continue to cure as time passes, be sure to store unused bars in a cool, dry place and always remove the shrink wrapping prior to storage. When using your soap, be sure to place them in a well-draining soap dish to prevent water from pooling and softening them as this may lead to wasted product.
